About IIT Bombay

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (abbreviated as IITB or IIT Bombay) is a public engineering institution located in Pawai, Mumbai, India.

  • Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. The funds from UNESCO came as Roubles from the then Soviet Union. In 1961 Parliament decreed the  IITs as  ‘Institutes of National Importance’. Since then, IITB has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world.
  • Members of the faculty of the institute have won many prestigious awards and recognitions, including the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar and Padma awards.

IIT Bombay is well known for its extensive residential facilities. Students have the luxury of being located in Powai, one of the finer suburbs of Mumbai, outside the bustle of the city, yet not far from the attractions of the city during weekends.

The academic area chiefly comprises the main building, various departmental annexes, and auditoria. All department annexes are connected by a corridor named Infinite Corridor. Beyond the Convocation Hall lie most of the hostels. There are a total of 18 hostels, of which two hostels (Hostels 10 and 11) and a wing of the newly constructed hostel (Hostel 15) are for female students.

Low-cost lenses to turn smartphones into microscopes

IIT Bombay researchers develop techniques to make tiny, inexpensive lenses that can be used on smartphones

Would it not be nice if we could attach a tiny, low-cost lens to our smartphones to have an in-depth look into our blood cells, or identify fake currency notes? Now Prof. Soumya Mukherji and his group of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have developed a robust and inexpensive technique to make small lenses that can do just that. In the annual science and technology festival of IIT Bombay, TechFest 2018, the exhibit of these lenses among other displays of his lab attracted big crowds.

AVENUES Fest

AVENUES is the International Business festival of IIT Bombay organized by Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay. Comprising a potpourri of management events targeted at the budding managers and combines learning with fun. B-School students across the globe participate in this extravaganza to outdo and outlast the competition. Repairing Damaged Industrial Components for Sustainable Industrial Growth

The study proposes an improved additive manufacturing method to restore damaged components

 

Does it not break your heart when you have to replace an expensive possession just because of some small damage? Many would certainly prefer repair and reuse, if possible! It is no wonder that ‘reuse and recycle’ is the often recited slogan for the sustainable consumption of many goods. In the aircraft industry, industrial components, engine parts and even molds required to make them, undergo wear and tear—mostly on the surface and subsurface—after a period of operation.


However, for these crucial and high-cost components, we must also have reliable ways to repair them, to prolong their lives.
